Giving Feedback : The Perils of Avoiding it

Feedback is an essential part of team development; it tells your team how they’re doing and what they need to change or continue to do to progress in their role and ultimately career.

Giving feedback is fundamental for any manager if they want to help their team move forward. But for many managers it can be daunting; what if you get it wrong, how will they feel, what if they get upset? These questions can result in some avoiding giving feedback completely.

Think about it. Should you be asking yourself what might happen if you don’t give that feedback? Instead of looking at the short-term discomfort, look at the bigger picture and the wider impacts for both the team and the individual.

The team: By avoiding giving feedback you’re likely upsetting the team - they see someone not performing well and you not doing anything about - that tells the rest of the team firstly, you aren’t bothered about good performance and second that they are being treated unfairly. Standards and performance can drop.

The individual: You’re not helping the individual by not telling them what’s not working. They will likely feel aggrieved when they get to the end of year review and they get a rubbish grade. They will blame you for not being clear and giving them the opportunity to improve or change.

This 45 minute session will help you prepare, plan and deliver feedback more confidently.
